Learners share their experiences and daily life as a student in Kilbeggan Youthreach.
Life here as a student, it is quite easy, its fun and you learn a lot more about yourself when you’re here.
Coming to Youthreach from secondary school, at first, I was nervous, and it took me a bit to get used to here, but the staff are way more supportive than in Secondary school and are always there when you need help.
I plan on coming back to Kilbeggan Youthreach to finish my level 4 and then do my level 5. I would like to become a journalist, preferably in sports media.
The staff here are very supportive, helpful and very kind. They always try to help us when needed and you can just talk to them about anything, and they always listen to you.
Being in Youthreach is good I’ve been here 3 years, and I enjoyed my time here.
Coming from secondary school to Youthreach was a big change and took a bit getting used to but once you’re used to the way things work and run it’s a lot better than secondary school its less stressful and there’s more support if needed.
Once I finish my QQI Level 5 my plans are to get a summer job and then go to TUS in Athlone to do engineering or digital marking.
The staff are very nice, kind, you can have laugh with them, and they will help you with anything they are able to help with.
I like being a student in this centre. I feel this is what I needed to grow as a student academically and also as a person. This positive environment makes me feel good about coming into my classes. I always find myself talking about how I developed personal skills in here that will help me in future.
Secondary school was not the best learning experience I had. I used to have fear about being judged or being different than other kids which made it harder for me to come into classes. The atmosphere in school felt very toxic and instead of focusing on myself and my grades, I used to care about what others think, but coming into this centre with having rules implemented and good staff, I have felt the need to prioritise and try to be the best version of myself.
I plan on coming back in September to finish my level 5. After that, I’m planning to do my level 6 in Moate business college maybe as it is convenient to where I live and also the course is about community development with psychology, as I don’t have much experience in psychology as a subject right now it will help me with getting a solid foundation before jumping into level 8 university.
I feel very connected with the staff in here. They care about each learner and want nothing but the best outcomes for all the learners. Whenever I struggled with a particular subject or didn’t catch up quickly as other learners they would be patient and was always here for any kind of support to my needs. They can be very encouraging even when I think I didn’t do good in exams or assignments, they always say “you did the best you can”, I find these words really encourages me to do better as a learner.
I like the idea of bonding with the staff and learners together, for example when we play games, we get to learn more about each other’s interest which is important in forming platonic relationships. The Easter Event Day was something I truly enjoyed in the centre, it felt like we were a big family with helping each other out with decoration and creating games was a great way for all the learners and staff to form a connection.
Life as a student for the time I’ve been here has been very enjoyable. I met very nice students and staff. The workload is not too bad, and I prefer the assessments as I like to work on things by myself and get them done. I usually get the bus in the mornings and after school, which can be nice in preparation for commuting to college and building independence.
Coming from secondary school, there has been a big change in the environment, work, and some social aspects. In secondary school, the workload was overwhelming as well as the exams. With continuous assessment, it takes away a lot of stress and makes school more enjoyable. I was quite anxious in secondary school as most students did not get along, whereas here everyone gets along with each other’s company. Coming from secondary school, I was not used to the use of laptops as our main source of learning came from books. I prefer the use of laptops as it will prepare me for college and is an easier way of communicating with teachers and sending in work.
I plan to go to Maynooth College or somewhere nearby so I can commute. I plan to study something along the lines of psychology, children, or something to do with animals. I am thinking about doing a level 6 course to get an idea of what I would like.
The staff here are very welcoming and kind. They try to get to know you, and it is easier with there not being too many students. The staff are very helpful with work and making sure you’re not too stressed and on top of your work. For the time being here I feel that I get along with the staff well and they put in their best efforts to make everyone feel comfortable.
The things we do here are very inclusive and stress free, we do our classwork, but we also have fun. We have meditation and mental health breaks which help a lot to relax. It helps with bonding for the students and staff too.
